TALEIGAO: Tensions ran high in Odxel village on Tuesday night after heavy rains caused mud-laden floodwaters to enter several homes, triggering a confrontation between Taleigao MLA Jeniffer Monserratte and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders Cecille Rodrigues and Francis Coelho. The incident has sparked outrage among residents, who allege that unregulated hill cutting linked to the ongoing Anantham construction project is responsible for the flooding.
Locals claim that extensive excavation and careless dumping of earth by the project developers have left the hillside unstable. Despite repeated alerts and warnings from the community, authorities allegedly failed to act. When intense rainfall hit the area, large volumes of loose mud reportedly slid downhill, flooding residential properties and causing considerable damage.
AAP leader Cecille Rodrigues, who rushed to the site following distress calls, described the scene as devastating. “Homes were submerged in muddy water. This situation was entirely avoidable. It’s not a natural calamity — it’s the direct result of human negligence,” she stated.
The incident has reignited concerns over unchecked construction activity in ecologically fragile areas, with citizens and activists demanding immediate accountability and action to prevent future disasters.
