PANAJI/VERNA: Goa has witnessed a series of serious road accidents, with three fatalities reported, raising fresh concerns over road safety across the state.
Among the victims was 22-year-old Mitesh Mohan Shet, a resident of Guirim, who died in an accident involving a military vehicle and a two-wheeler at Goa Velha.
In a separate incident, a head-on collision between a Triumph motorcycle and a Maruti Ertiga taxi on the New Mandovi Bridge left two motorcycle occupants critically injured on Monday, October 26.
According to preliminary information received by the police, the accident occurred at around 3.23 am. The motorcycle, bearing registration number MH-03-DZ-9651, was travelling from Porvorim towards Panaji, while the Ertiga taxi (GA-04-T-8797) was proceeding in the opposite direction.
The motorcycle was ridden by 22-year-old Kushagra Patale, a student from Mumbai, who was accompanied by another male occupant. Both sustained critical injuries and were shifted to Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim.
The taxi driver, Rajkumar Kattimani, a resident of Sangolda, sustained minor injuries and was also taken to GMC.
Preliminary findings suggest that the taxi may have attempted to overtake by crossing into the opposite lane, while the motorcycle may have been travelling at high speed. The circumstances leading to the head-on collision are subject to investigation.
The incidents once again bring road safety into focus, particularly the dangers posed by unsafe overtaking, excessive speed and collisions involving vehicles travelling in opposite directions.
