New Delhi:
In a world marked by geopolitical tensions, India has once again demonstrated its unique ability to navigate complex diplomatic landscapes. As Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar returned to New Delhi after a five-day visit to the US for Donald Trump’s inauguration, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri embarked on a crucial mission to China, highlighting India’s adeptness in balancing ties between some of the world’s most powerful and often adversarial nations.
India’s diplomatic prowess is underscored by its ability to engage with a diverse array of global actors. Jaishankar’s recent visit to the US, where he met with the US Secretary of State and National Security Adviser, was a significant step in strengthening India-US bilateral ties. This engagement was particularly noteworthy given the current geopolitical climate, with the US and China locked in a trade and strategic standoff.
Engaging All Sides
Jaishankar’s remarks during a visit to Spain earlier this month encapsulated India’s diplomatic strategy. He emphasized that India is one of the few countries capable of engaging both Russia and Ukraine, as well as Israel and Iran, in a world increasingly polarized. This unique position allows India to play a mediating role in global conflicts, a stance reinforced by Prime Minister Modi’s assertion that India has “always chosen the side of peace.”
The US-China tensions, with the US threatening hefty tariffs on China and the BRICS+ countries, and China warning of retaliation, provide a challenging backdrop for India’s diplomatic efforts. Despite these pressures, India remains committed to engaging all sides for positive and constructive outcomes. Jaishankar’s visit to the US and Misri’s upcoming visit to China are part of this broader strategy.
Rebuilding India-China Relations
The India-China relationship has been a focal point of India’s diplomatic efforts, particularly after a four-and-a-half-year military standoff along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) brought bilateral ties to a standstill. Recent meetings between PM Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Russia have set the stage for rebuilding these ties. An agreement to pull back troops from buffer zones has restored the status quo ante, paving the way for further diplomatic engagements.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri’s visit to China is aimed at fostering this renewed momentum. His discussions will cover critical issues such as boundary talks, maintaining peace along the LAC, and enhancing people-to-people ties. The resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, direct flights between the two countries, and the facilitation of visa issuance for Chinese citizens are also on the agenda.
Global Issues and Mutual Interests
The bilateral mechanism between India and China will also address issues of mutual global interest. The BRICS+ grouping, sanctions on Russia, the situation in the Middle East, and Syria are expected to be discussed. Additionally, the US backing out of the Paris Climate agreement and the WHO, as well as the need for UN reforms, including the Security Council, will be part of the dialogue.
China has welcomed Misri’s visit, expressing optimism about its outcome. This positive reception underscores the mutual interest in strengthening ties and addressing common challenges.
In this complex geopolitical landscape, India’s ability to balance its relationships with multiple adversaries while pursuing its national interests is a testament to its evolving diplomatic strategy. As India continues to navigate these delicate relationships, its role as a global mediator and leader becomes increasingly significant.
