CANACONA: The foundation stone for a new ₹3.87 crore fish market was laid at Chaudi in Canacona on Sunday, with the project aimed at providing a modern and hygienic facility for local vendors.
The foundation stone was unveiled by Arts and Culture, Sports and Youth Affairs, and Tribal Affairs Minister and Canacona MLA Ramesh Tawadkar. Although the plaque also carries the names of Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant and Urban Development Minister Vishwajit Rane, neither attended the ceremony.
Addressing the gathering, Tawadkar criticised recent protests over the condition of the existing municipal fish market, stating that the project had been delayed due to the absence of bidders in two earlier tendering attempts. He said the work order was issued only after the third tender process was successful.
According to Tawadkar, the GSUDA-designed market will be completed within a year and will accommodate more than 60 local fish vendors. The facility will include dedicated hygienic sections for fish, poultry and meat. He also said a temporary modern shed would be provided to vendors while construction is underway.
Several former municipal chairpersons, local elected representatives and panchayat members attended the foundation stone-laying ceremony.
