New Delhi: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has sought urgent intervention from HDFC Bank to freeze the party’s bank accounts amid a deepening internal crisis triggered by a large-scale rebellion within its ranks.
In an extraordinary move, senior TMC leader and former party treasurer Aroop Biswas wrote to the bank’s Central Plaza branch in Kolkata, requesting an immediate halt to all operations in the party’s accounts. The letter comes as the party leadership grapples with fears that rebel leaders could attempt to gain control over its finances.
According to the letter accessed by News18, Biswas warned that rival factions within the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) were claiming to be the party’s legitimate office-bearers. He urged the bank to prevent any unauthorised transactions, citing a “genuine and reasonable apprehension” that the rebel camp could try to take over the accounts.
Biswas requested the bank to maintain status quo and suspend all debit transactions, fund transfers, encumbrances and changes to the accounts’ operating mandate until the leadership dispute is resolved.
The letter also reveals the extent of the political turmoil engulfing the party. It claims that the existing leadership now has the support of only eight of the party’s 28 MPs and two of its 60 MLAs, while the remaining legislators and parliamentarians have aligned with the rebel faction.
Adding to the concerns, Biswas flagged the existence of several pre-signed blank cheques kept at the party headquarters for routine administrative expenses. According to the letter, there are fears that these cheques could be accessed and misused by the rebel camp to withdraw or divert party funds.
Notably, Biswas no longer serves as the party treasurer. He was replaced by Subhashish Chakravarty after TMC chief Mamata Banerjee reorganised the party following its disappointing performance in the West Bengal Assembly elections.
