VALPOI: Concerns over water quality and public health in Sattari have intensified after worm-like organisms were reportedly spotted on drain covers in parts of Valpoi, days after similar organisms were found in drinking water supplied to households in Zarme village.
The fresh sightings have deepened public anxiety and prompted calls for a comprehensive investigation into the source of the organisms and the possibility of a broader environmental or sanitation issue affecting the area.
Residents have demanded that authorities urgently determine whether the organisms found in the water supply and those now appearing around drainage infrastructure are related. Many have also questioned whether existing monitoring mechanisms are adequate to detect and prevent such incidents.
The issue has already attracted the attention of the Goa Human Rights Commission (GHRC), which recently took suo motu cognisance of reports regarding the presence of worm-like organisms in drinking water supplied to Zarme village.
As part of its inquiry, the Commission has sought explanations from the Public Works Department and the Health Department. Officials from both departments have been directed to submit reports and appear before the Commission on June 23.
The emergence of similar organisms in another public setting has heightened expectations that the investigation will go beyond the immediate water contamination complaint and examine possible environmental and infrastructural factors contributing to the problem.
Local residents have urged authorities to conduct scientific testing of water samples, inspect distribution pipelines and drainage systems, and publicly disclose findings to restore confidence among consumers.
The incident has also sparked wider discussions on water quality surveillance and the need for regular inspections of public utility networks, particularly during the monsoon season when contamination risks can increase.
While authorities are yet to establish the nature and origin of the organisms, the latest reports have intensified pressure on the concerned departments to provide clarity and ensure that public health is not compromised.
With the matter now under the scrutiny of the Goa Human Rights Commission, residents are awaiting definitive answers on the source of the contamination and the measures being taken to prevent any recurrence.
