CHICALIM: In an initiative promoting environmental conservation and public health, social worker Tulsidas Fal Dessai on Thursday distributed fruit-bearing saplings to doctors, nurses and staff at Chicalim District Hospital, encouraging the creation of greener and healthier public spaces.
The programme, attended by Chicalim Panchayat members and local residents, focused on promoting tree plantation while highlighting the role healthcare institutions can play in environmental sustainability.
Unlike conventional plantation drives, the initiative featured fruit-bearing saplings to emphasise their long-term benefits, including enhancing green cover, supporting biodiversity and providing nutritious fruits in the future.
Speaking on the occasion, Dessai said environmental protection is a collective responsibility and urged citizens to actively participate in tree plantation and conservation. He noted that rapid urbanisation has reduced green spaces and stressed the need for individuals and institutions to reverse the trend through sustained efforts.
He appealed to hospital staff to nurture the saplings and inspire patients and visitors to undertake similar initiatives in their homes and communities.
Doctors and hospital staff welcomed the initiative and pledged to care for the saplings, stating that a greener hospital campus would create a cleaner, healthier and more pleasant environment for patients, visitors and healthcare workers alike.
Panchayat members also praised the initiative, saying community-led plantation drives are essential to tackle climate change and rising temperatures. They called on educational institutions, government offices and other public establishments to organise similar campaigns.
The programme concluded with an appeal to the public to plant and nurture at least one tree every year, reinforcing the message that collective community action is key to building a greener and more sustainable future.
