CANACONA: Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari’s OSD Amol Birasdar Patil inspected the accident-prone NH-66 road at Gulem and examined the traffic island on Manohar Parrikar Canacona Bypass Road (MPCBR) to establish the Statute of Chhatrapati Shivaji on Wednesday.
According to sources, Gadkari’s OSD Amol Birasdas Patil first inspected the treacherous sharp turn at Karmalghat in the presence of Canacona MLA and GLA Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar, officials of the PWD (Highways) and others.
On observing the overall situation at the Karmalghat section of NH-66, Patil has commented that the road’s width is too narrow and responsible for the mishaps very often.
Down along, the OSD was shown the Gulem section of NH-66 road, where many vehicles have tumbled off the road, including the two loaded trucks that went down very recently.
At this section, the union minister’s OSD observed that most of the road alignment of the Gulem section of NH66 road has no setback and has dangerous high-rising edges, which trigger falls of the vehicles.
Patil also informed that, as directed earlier, on the Karmalghat road, more inspections would be held, and works would be expedited on top priority. ‘I will convey the message to the Union minister for Transport Nitin Gadkari ji and will expedite this matter as early as possible as the road situation is hazardous for the people’s life, ‘ Patil reportedly informed after the inspections.
Chairperson of Canacona Municipal Council Ramakant Naik Gaonkar, PWD Assistant Engineer Sagar Shet, AE (Rtd) Subhash Pagi, PS to speaker Rajendra Borkar, Shristhal Ex-Sarpanch Ganesh Velip, Gulem Panch members Akshada Velip and Nilesh J Gaonkar GCA Vice-President Shambha Naik Desai, Social worker Samrat Bhagat were also present during road inspection.
Tawadkar and others present led the OSD later to char-Rasta, where he was shown the Traffic Island, earmarked for establishing a Statute of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Canacona. Patil examined the venue and said the minister is committed to completing the structural plan for setting up Shivaji’s statute.
Besides, Tawadkar and CMC Chairperson, several Shiv Premi, were present during the site examination.
It may be recalled that during the second week of February Delhi visit of Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar, along with CMC Chairperson Ramakant Naikgaunkar, were given assurances by the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari to examine and prepare a structural plan for erecting a statue of the Maratha Warrior at Traffic Island of Manohar Parrikar Canacona Bypass Road at Char-rasta. Similarly, the union Minister has assured quicker action of removing the traffic bottlenecks on NH-66, especially at the accident-prone Karmalghat road and Gulem section, besides hastening up the land acquisition for the 4-lining of Gulem to Bendurdem NH-66.
