PANAJI: Goa Football Association (GFA) President Caetano Fernandes has raised alarm over the alleged operation of several illegal housie rackets in the state, calling for immediate government intervention.
According to Fernandes, at least four to five organized groups are running what he described as “housie mafias,” and he questioned the source of their substantial financial backing.
“I don’t know where they are getting such huge funds from. The government must investigate this. These mafias should be arrested,” he said.
While Fernandes did not name specific individuals or groups, his statement reflects growing concern among local leaders over the increasing presence and influence of unauthorized gambling operations in Goa.
He has urged authorities to closely monitor these activities and take strict action to curb their spread, stressing the need to protect local communities and maintain law and order.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant had signaled a tough stance on the growing housie racket in Goa, warning that the government will not hesitate to take action against organizers of large-scale games involving substantial prize money.
awant acknowledged that housie had traditionally been played at community events in a modest way, but expressed concern over its recent commercial expansion.
“Earlier, housie was part of social events and organized on a small scale — that was acceptable. But now, the prize amounts have soared, which is worrying. The law will deal with it strictly,” he said, reaffirming that legal provisions will be enforced where violations occur.
