PANAJI: The Goa Forward Party (GFP) has asked against speculation over its future political alignment, maintaining that the party’s focus remains on putting Goa’s interests first and bringing together secular political forces.
In a statement posted on X, the GFP said its position remained unchanged and that it was committed to creating a united alternative that was inclusive and focused on the interests of the people.
The party also appealed for speculation to be avoided until it makes any formal announcement on the matter.
GFP leader Prashant Naik, meanwhile, said there was no issue with making a “course correction” if required. Referring to the demand for opposition unity, Naik said that if political parties had misread public sentiment and later sought to correct their approach, such a move should not be rejected.
GFP president Vijai Sardesai has maintained that the party continues to stand by its ‘Goa First’ arrangement with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Sardesai said there was currently no rethink and that the party was occupied with the Ganesh Chaturthi festivities.
He indicated that any political developments, if they arise, would be considered after the festive period, while declining to comment on speculation.
Meanwhile, senior Congress leader M K Sheikh said Congress remained open to working with Sardesai and the GFP. Sheikh said the party had already extended an invitation and was waiting for Sardesai to take the next step.
On the possibility of AAP joining a broader opposition arrangement, Sheikh said any such proposal would have to be formally placed before the Congress leadership.
