PANAJI: According to the Directorate of Transport’s monthly report for September 2024, Goa saw 195 traffic incidents throughout the small state, which led to 18 fatalities and several injuries. This is a concerning trend. In order to combat the escalating accident rates, the data emphasizes the necessity of more stringent road safety regulations and raised public awareness.
The Directorate’s report states that there were 15 fatal incidents in total, with North Goa having the most fatalities (10 accidents) compared to South Goa’s 5.
Six incidents in North Goa and five in South Goa resulted in 13 persons suffering severe injuries.
Thirteen minor accidents were reported in North Goa and twelve in South Goa, resulting in simple injuries for thirty-four road users.
Additionally, there were 144 non-injury incidents, with 80 taking place in North Goa and 64 in South Goa.
With 10 riders (7 from North Goa and 3 from South Goa) and 6 pillion riders (4 from North Goa and 2 from South Goa) dying in a single month, two-wheelers are once again the most dangerous form of transportation in Goa.
The list of fatalities also included a pedestrian and a four-wheeler motorist who were both killed in different instances in North Goa.
The Transport Directorate issued a significant 12,392 challans for various infractions in an effort to enforce traffic safety laws and enhance compliance. Although the accident numbers show continued difficulties in road safety, this figure represents the State’s efforts to eliminate traffic infractions and dangerous driving practices.
