PORVORIM: With alcohol being one of the prime reasons for rising fatal accidents across Goa, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant today said that steps have been taken to identify the public drinking spots.
The Opposition today took on the government on the rising fatalities due to accidents in the state.
“Police have been identifying spots where drinking in public places have been taking place also PWD is checking the banking of roads in a bid to avoid accidents,” said Sawant.
Sawant said that action will be taken after identifying such spots and violates will be taken to task.
“In 2022, Goa reported 189 fatal & 85 self-fatal accidents; around 4,00,206 cases of violations booked; 4175 driving licenses cancelled,” CM added.
He further said that no precise cause can be mentioned for road accidents that lead to death.
However, some of the causes are lack of awareness about road discipline, rash and negligent driving/riding, lack of pedestrian crossings, drunken/dangerous driving, lack of proper Signages, Reflectors, Speed Calming signs and not wearing helmets.
“Road engineering and standards have not been neglected and violated while constructing roads in
the State. However, necessary IRC guidelines and
MoRTH specifications are generally followed in
entirety for new projects considering the land
availability constraints,” he added.
Sawant said that PWD has identified deficiencies in National Highways and all road safety precautions are adopted to prevent any untoward incidents.
“Wherever land is available four planning with
divided carriageway is provided. However, widening
is considered in land constraint localities,” he added.
Sawant said that no proposal has been moved as
of now. However, two Highway Patrolling vehicles are functional under the State Police Control Room,
Panaji. One each in North District and South District
AAP MLA Capt Venzy Viegas said that substandard Roads by PWD Contractor are the Root cause of accidents on Goan Roads.
“We must look at this from a human angle as Senior citizens, Pregnant women suffer due to the failure,” said Viegas.
