After Dhavlim’s major scrapyard fire tragedy on last 5 May, another Major Fire was reported in the heart of Ponda City.
The three Textile Shops cum showrooms are located in the basement of a commercial building wherein the clothes and readymade garments and stocks of a variety of clothes were gutted in fire, causing major loss.
The exact cause is unknown, but according to local vendors, it’s due to a short circuit.
It is suspected that the inverter for AC suddenly caught fire and spread like wildfire inside the stock of clothes inside the shops. The clothes packed in plastic added to the fire. The shops have only one entry and are situated within 100 meters of the area.
Around one lakh litres of water was used to douse fire brought from six fire stations and was not controlled till late at night.
As the fire was caused to shops in the basement, it was not visible but dark. Clouds of smoke engulfed the building, and from outside the building, only clouds of smoke billowing in the sky were seen for several hours. Although it has become difficult to breathe due to clouds of smoke, the fire personnel led by charge Sushil Morajkar bravely fought with fire to get control over it.
