PANAJI: Much to the dismay of industries in Goa, the Goa government on Sunday notified the minimum wages for different categories of workers from those employed in shops, agriculture etc to those employed in Commercial or industrial establishments.
The minimum wage per day varies from Rs 407 per day to Rs 570 per day based on the skill set and type of sector.
On average, a hike of Rs 100 has been introduced across categories. In addition to the minimum rates of basic wages, the special allowance (Variable Dearness Allowance) of Rs. 105 is to be paid to the workers, which is to be further calculated, adjusted and notified by the Commissioner, Labour and Employment, with prior approval of the Government, after every six months. The revision of minimum wages is likely to directly benefit 2.5 lakh workers employed in the State in both – organised and unorganised sectors.
Workers’ unions have been demanding a revision of minimum wages to Rs 750 per day for an unskilled category, Rs 805 per day for semi-skilled, Rs 910 per day for skilled and Rs 1000 per day for the highly skilled category of workers on the basis of the recommendations of the 15th Indian labour Conference and Supreme Court judgments.
