PANAJI: Minister for Archaeology Subhash Phal Dessai said there is no proposal before the Department of Archaeology to notify Chieftains Memorial at Cuncolim, Lohia Maidan at Margao, Azad Maidan at Panaji, Martyrs Memorial at Assolna and Patradevi as places of historical importance.
“There is no proposal before the Department of Archaeology to notify Chieftains Memorial at Cuncolim, Lohia Maidan at Margao, Azad Maidan at Panaji, Martyrs Memorial at Assolna and Patradevi as places of historical importance,” said Phal Dessai.
He further said that as per The Goa Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1978 and Rules 1980, Government has notified 51 Protected Monuments / Sites in Goa.
“The places of historical importance connected to the Goa Revolution Movement, Goa Liberation Movements like Chieftains Memorial, Lohia Maidan, Azad Maidan, Martyrs Memorial at Assolna and Patradevi need to be preserved, protected, maintained renovated and beautified,’ he added.
He said places of Historic importance connected to the Goa Revolution Movement and Goa Liberation Movements as above are not under the protection of the Department of Archaeology, and the custody of the above places is with various other authorities like PWD, Local Bodies, etc.
“There is no such proposal as of now to extend the Restoration and Renovation of Temples scheme to places of Historical Importance, Forts, Churches and Mosques, Relics of religious Shrines in Goa,” he added.
Minister said that for the Restoration / Maintenance of Protected Monuments / Sites under the Department of Archaeology, there is no timeline set. However, The Department undertakes such work from time to time and on a need basis.
