PANAJI: The Government of Goa has reaffirmed its commitment to preserving the state’s traditional handloom heritage and supporting weavers and artisans, with Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant assuring that the government will facilitate market access for quality handloom products.
The assurance came during the state-level celebration of the 12th National Handloom Day, organised by the Department of Handicrafts, Textile & Coir at the Multipurpose Hall, Sanskruti Bhavan, Patto, Panaji, on August 7.
Speaking on the occasion, Sawant said the government was working to give a distinct identity to Goa’s handloom products, particularly the iconic Kunbi Saree. He said the introduction of weaving machinery in villages has increased women’s participation in the sector, while demand for Kunbi Sarees is growing across the country.
“Produce quality products, and the Government will ensure market access,” Sawant said, assuring handloom weavers of continued government support.
The Chief Minister also highlighted efforts to promote Kunbi products beyond Goa, noting that Kunbi Shawls are presented to distinguished visitors, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as part of the state’s efforts to showcase its handloom heritage.
Sawant said work on establishing wider market linkages for Kunbi products is in its final stage. He also visited the exhibition stalls and appreciated the efforts of women artisans working to preserve Goa’s traditional weaving practices from Pernem to Canacona.
The celebration featured live demonstrations of handloom weaving and traditional block printing, along with an exhibition showcasing products from the Department’s 13 Handloom Production Centres and three Handloom Training Centres. A handloom fashion show presented by students was also organised.
During the programme, the Chief Minister distributed Loom Allotment Certificates and Sanction Orders to eligible handloom weavers, highlighting the government’s focus on the revival and modernisation of the sector.
The National Handloom Day celebration also promoted the nationwide campaigns #MyHandloomMyPride and #MyProductMyPride, with the government emphasising the importance of authentic handloom products, stronger market linkages, skill development and sustainable livelihoods.
The programme was attended by Secretary, Department of Handicrafts, Textile & Coir Nikhil U. Dessai, IAS; Director Sagun R. Velip; DRDA Project Director Dipali Naik; Assistant Director Sonia Kunkalkar; handloom weavers, artisans, students and other guests.
The government said such initiatives are aimed at empowering Goa’s weaving community while safeguarding the state’s traditional handloom heritage for future generations.
