PERNEM: Mopa Police has arrested Max Hubertus Johannes (Netherlands) for allegedly being found in the possession of a satellite phone.
“Max Hubertus Johannes is a foreign national from Netherlands, Its banned in India to use a satellite phone until on possesses requisite permissions,” said Police
Police said that investigation is on and action will be taken on the findings.
Max has been booked under the Indian Wireless Telegraphy Act and Section 20 of the Indian Telegraph Act, while the device has been seized.
Bringing a satellite phone into India can lead to detention and / or arrest. The ownership and operation of satellite communications systems and amateur radio equipment is strictly regulated in India.
Satellite phones have to either be purchased in India from an authorised distributor or can be imported into India after receiving permission from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). Iridium and Thuraya satellite phones are illegal in India.
“Visitors and tourists coming to India are advised to comply with Indian laws and not bring in or use satellite phones in India without obtaining specific permission / license in advance from the concerned authorities,” sources said.
