MARGAO: Kanhaiya Lal Yadav has been sentenced to life imprisonment and fined ₹1.5 lakh after being convicted for the murder of 35-year-old Sanjay Yadav, whose body was found buried in an isolated area near the Meta Strips company in Sankval in December 2022.
Sanjay Yadav, a resident of Zuari Nagar who worked as a daily-wage labourer at a scrap yard, was found buried under construction debris in an isolated location opposite the Meta Strips company in Sankval.
Following the discovery, Verna police launched an investigation and established the identity of the deceased. Kanhaiya Lal Yadav, a resident of Sankval and originally from Uttar Pradesh, was arrested within a few hours of the incident.
According to the investigation, Yadav allegedly killed Sanjay Yadav by striking him on the head with a heavy object. The accused was then alleged to have dumped the body in a hilly area near Meta Strips and attempted to destroy evidence.
Verna police registered a case under Sections 302 and 201 of the Indian Penal Code.
After hearing the case, the court found Kanhaiya Lal Yadav guilty of murder and sentenced him to life imprisonment along with a fine of ₹1.5 lakh.
The court further directed that in the event of failure to pay the fine, the convict would undergo an additional one year of simple imprisonment.
The court also ordered that the period of imprisonment already undergone by the accused be set off against the sentence imposed.
