PANAJI: Goa University and the Directorate of Fisheries, Government of Goa, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) under the Matsya Sandhana Kshetram programme to strengthen scientific research, innovation and sustainable development in the fisheries sector.
The MoU was signed at Goa University on August 10, with the collaboration focusing on research, skill development, technology-driven initiatives and improved opportunities for Goa’s fishing community.
Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant said the fisheries sector forms an important part of Goa’s social, cultural and economic fabric and plays a significant role in supporting livelihoods and food security.
Sawant said the partnership between Goa University and the Fisheries Directorate would encourage research, innovation and skill development while promoting sustainable growth in the sector. He also called for greater training opportunities for local youth and fishermen while ensuring that Goa’s traditional fishing practices and cultural heritage are preserved.
He said strengthening the fisheries sector would contribute towards the Government’s vision of building a Swayampurna Goa.
The programme also saw the launch of the ‘Matsya Sandhana Kshetram’ app, a Potential Fishing Zone Guidance Application developed using satellite observations, oceanographic data and advanced analysis.
The application is aimed at helping fishermen identify potential fishing zones, reducing the time spent searching for fishing grounds and lowering fuel and operational costs. It is also expected to improve the chances of productive catches and support safer and more efficient fishing operations.
The initiative seeks to strengthen Goa’s Blue Economy by connecting scientific research with practical solutions for the fishing community. The collaboration is expected to promote responsible use of marine resources while creating greater opportunities for local fishermen.

Dhuri, Goa State Research Foundation Chairman Prof. Janardana, Fisheries Director Dr. Samila Monteiro, Dean of the School of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences Prof. Anthony A. Viegas, senior government officials, university representatives and members of the fisheries sector attended the programme.
