PANAJI: In a remarkable journey marked by academic excellence and a commitment to national service, Goa’s former NEET topper Lt Abhida Barretto has been commissioned as a Medical Officer in the Indian Army after completing her MBBS from the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune.
A native of Muthal-Sadolxem in Canacona, Barretto had secured the highest rank in Goa in the NEET examination, making her eligible for admission to leading medical institutions, including AIIMS and JIPMER. However, she chose AFMC, driven by her ambition to combine a career in medicine with service in the armed forces.
Although she comes from a civilian background, Barretto developed an interest in the military during her school years. Encouragement from her teachers strengthened her resolve to pursue a career that would allow her to serve the country while practising medicine.
During her time at AFMC, she consistently excelled in academics and was recognised for her outstanding performance. She received several distinctions, including the Maj Gen N.D.P. Karani Trophy, and graduated among the top students of her batch. She also earned gold medals in multiple medical subjects for her academic achievements.
Following her commissioning as a Lieutenant in the Indian Army Medical Corps, Barretto will begin her internship before taking up operational responsibilities as a Medical Officer.
Her achievement has been widely hailed as a proud moment for Goa, highlighting a path where academic success is matched by a commitment to public service and the nation.
