PANAJI: The Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) organised a technical session on the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, at its auditorium in Saligao to enhance awareness among stakeholders on the implementation of the new rules and showcase Goa’s best practices in scientific waste management.
The programme was attended by GSPCB Chairman Dr. Levinson J. Martins, IAS, Member Secretary Dr. Geeta S. Nagvenkar, GCS, Regional Director of the Central Pollution Control Board Dr. J. Chandra Babu, and Goa Waste Management Corporation Deputy Manager Rohan Ghadi.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Levinson J. Martins stressed the importance of scientific and sustainable waste management for environmental protection and public health. He highlighted the government’s efforts in establishing modern infrastructure for the management of municipal solid waste, biomedical waste, hazardous waste and Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs).
He also emphasised the need for active participation by Urban Local Bodies, Village Panchayats, industries, institutions and the public to ensure effective implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026.
Dr. J. Chandra Babu delivered a detailed presentation on the provisions of the new rules, explaining the responsibilities of waste generators, local authorities, bulk waste generators and other stakeholders.
Rohan Ghadi highlighted Goa’s best practices in implementing the rules, including efficient waste collection and processing systems, operation of Material Recovery Facilities, scientific disposal of municipal solid waste and remediation of legacy waste dumpsites.
The session was attended by officials from government departments, Urban Local Bodies, Village Panchayats, industries, educational institutions, environmental professionals and representatives of various stakeholder organisations.
The programme was also conducted in hybrid mode, enabling participation by officials from across the country. Representatives from State Pollution Control Boards in Odisha, Meghalaya, Karnataka and Kerala joined the session virtually.
