GUIRIM: Jochele Correia, a student of VM Salgaocar College of Law and member of the Guirim Free Legal Aid Cell, organised a program on Fire Safety for the students and staff of PM Shri Government High School, Namoshi Guirim. As a part of the program, Miss Jochele conducted a legal literacy session educating students about the Right to Education Act 2009, which also emphasizes the importance of safety in schools, including disaster management. The session was specially curated for the students.
This followed by a demonstration on the use of fire extinguishers, which was successfully conducted in collaboration with the Fire and Emergency Services Department for the students and staff of the school. The Mapusa fire personnel team assisted in the demonstration and the participants got hands on experience of using extinguishers.
The program aimed to ensure safety of the people, recognising that panic often sets in when faced with a fire emergency. To combat this, the program aimed to provide clarity of mind on what to do and how to respond in such situations. By empowering individuals with knowledge of how to use fire safety equipment, they can not only protect themselves but also provide crucial aid to the fire department until they arrive, helping to control and eliminate the fire. The program benefited 102 students as well as an additional teaching and non- teaching staff members of the school.
