PANAJI: Forest Minister Vishwajit Rane has expressed appreciation to the Forest Department and partner organisations following the successful rescue, rehabilitation and release of a critically endangered Hawksbill sea turtle found injured at Polem Beach.
The turtle was rescued on August 2, 2026, after being found injured at the beach. Following treatment and rehabilitation, it was successfully released back into the sea on August 19 after making a full recovery.
The rescue operation involved close coordination between the South Goa Marine Range staff and Drishti Marine Lifeguards, who assisted in the rescue and release of the turtle. Veterinary care was provided by NGO ReefWatch as part of the rehabilitation process.
Rane highlighted the successful operation as an example of effective teamwork between government agencies, marine rescue personnel and conservation organisations working to protect Goa’s marine biodiversity.
He also praised the functioning of the Goa Marine Stranding Network, described as the first of its kind in the country, for facilitating coordinated responses to marine wildlife emergencies.
Rane said the successful rescue and release reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting Goa’s rich marine ecosystem and natural heritage.
He complimented all the individuals and organisations involved in the operation, stating that a Viksit Goa must also be a Goa that safeguards and preserves its natural heritage.
