PANAJI: The Bombay High Court at Goa has granted interim relief to the Goa Vikas Party (GVP) by staying the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) order that removed the party from the list of recognised political parties in the state.
The interim order means the party will continue to be eligible to contest elections in Goa while its challenge against the Commission’s decision is pending before the court.
The ECI had issued the order on September 19 after noting that the Goa Vikas Party had not participated in elections for several years, including the 2022 Goa Assembly polls. The Commission held that the party no longer satisfied the conditions required for continued recognition.
Challenging the decision, the Goa Vikas Party approached the High Court, arguing that the de-registration order was not legally sustainable and seeking temporary protection until the case is heard in full.
After considering the submissions, the High Court ordered a stay on the operation of the ECI’s decision, ensuring that the party’s status remains protected during the pendency of the proceedings.
With the interim relief in force, the Goa Vikas Party can continue its political activities and field candidates in elections held in the state until the court delivers its final judgment on the petition.
