As we stand on the brink of a new year, many Goans are looking forward to 2025 with the hope that it brings more happiness and resolution to the lingering challenges faced by the state.
The year 2024 has been a mixed bag for the people of Goa, marked by both moments of celebration and controversies that have left many concerned about the future.
The political landscape at the start of 2024 saw the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) maintaining its dominance at the Centre, which could have spelt continuity and stability.
However, the narrow victory of Capt. Viriato Fernandes from the INDIA alliance gave rise to a feeling of optimism among opposition supporters. It raised hopes of a united front that could challenge the BJP in future elections. This political dynamic creates a fertile ground for positive change, but the ultimate result remains to be seen in the coming months.
Among the myriad issues that need addressing, the Mhadei water dispute stands out as a critical challenge. The ongoing controversy over water resources has pitted Goa against neighbouring states, underscoring the need for a diplomatic and equitable resolution.
Additionally, the double-tracking project has become a flashpoint of contention amid concerns about environmental degradation and local livelihood disruptions. As these issues continue to simmer, 2025 could be the year when decisive action is needed to ensure Goa’s interests are protected.
2024 also witnessed several controversies that rocked the state and captured public attention. The “Cash for Jobs” scandal, which came to light earlier this year, sent shockwaves through the community and is currently under investigation by the Crime Branch. Issues of integrity and transparency in governance remain paramount, and such controversies erode public trust in leadership.
Another alarming incident was the escape of Suleman Siddiqui from Crime Branch custody, which raised serious questions about the efficiency and integrity of law enforcement. This incident, involving a police constable’s alleged complicity, reflects broader systemic issues that demand urgent reforms.
The vibrant cultural scene in Goa, particularly events like the Sunburn music festival, has been tainted by tragedy. The death of 26-year-old Kashyap following the festival has sparked discussions around safety and health protocols at large events. The autopsy results and police investigations into the cause remain unclear, igniting concerns over the safety measures in place for partygoers.
Moreover, the rise in violent incidents has left residents rattled. The shocking murder of a youth from Andhra Pradesh after a brawl at a beach shack adds weight to the calls for improved safety and security. While Goa Police has reported a 96% detection rate in crimes, the underlying statistics are troubling: 29 murders and a similar number of attempted murders, along with over 100 reported cases of rape in 2024 alone. These numbers highlight an urgent need for community-focused initiatives aimed at curbing violence and enhancing public safety.
As we hope for a brighter 2025, it is essential for the people of Goa to rally together to address these pressing issues. A peaceful and equitable Goa is what the people desire, and it is crucial that efforts are directed towards creating a safer, more inclusive environment. Let us march into the new year with the resolve to resolve conflicts, uphold justice, and cultivate a thriving community where everyone can flourish.
