CANACONA: A joint inspection of the Cutbona jetty was carried out by Goa Civic and Consumer Action Network (GOACAN) along with officials from the Fisheries Department, local health authorities, Civic Forum Velim, and representatives of Cutbona boat owners, focusing on health and hygiene conditions at the site.
During the visit, it was observed that the Sulabh toilet facility constructed by the Fisheries Department was not functioning effectively due to a lack of water supply. Inspecting teams also noted that the newly developed jetty area was poorly maintained, with cleanliness issues evident and certain private fabrication activities being carried out on the premises.
Stakeholders stressed the importance of maintaining proper sanitation, particularly in light of past instances of vector-borne and water-related diseases such as cholera, jaundice, and diarrhoea reported during the monsoon period. With fishing activities expected to resume after the seasonal ban, concerns were raised about preventing any potential health risks.
The inspection also highlighted the absence of basic amenities at the jetty, including access to clean drinking water. Workers were reportedly seen using river water for washing fish, raising serious hygiene concerns. Additionally, the need for regular medical support for workers operating at the jetty was emphasized.
Authorities and stakeholders are expected to take corrective measures to address these shortcomings and improve overall conditions at the busy fishing hub.
