SANGUEM: The investigation into the killing of Tanvi Ghadi in South Goa has taken a serious turn, with police focusing on the use and origin of an illegal firearm allegedly involved in the incident.
The accused, Shwet Gawde, was arrested earlier and has been remanded to police custody for further interrogation as investigators attempt to trace how he procured the unlicensed weapon. Officials said the firearm used in the shooting was not registered, raising concerns about illegal arms circulation in the state.
According to police sources, the victim sustained a fatal gunshot injury during a gathering at a residence in Sanguem. While initial accounts suggested the possibility of negligence, investigators are now examining whether the accused was aware that the weapon was loaded at the time of the incident.
The illegal weapon has become central to the probe, with police working to identify its origin, supply chain, and whether others were involved in its acquisition or possession. Authorities are also looking into possible violations under the Arms Act, in addition to the murder charge already registered against the accused.
Sources indicated that forensic analysis, including ballistic examination and other technical evidence, will play a key role in establishing the sequence of events. Statements from those present at the gathering are also being recorded to piece together the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
The case has drawn attention to concerns over the presence of unlicensed firearms and lapses in monitoring their movement. Police are expected to widen the investigation if links to a larger network emerge.
Further developments are likely once the custodial interrogation progresses and forensic reports are received.
