SACORDA: A truck allegedly carrying laterite stones from illegally operating quarries overturned near the Canara Bank junction at Sacorda after reportedly crashing into a roadside divider, bringing the issue of illegal quarrying and unchecked transport of mining material back into focus.
According to local sources, the truck was travelling along the Malle–Sacorda route after allegedly loading laterite stones from Malpan, where illegal laterite quarrying activities are reportedly continuing despite previous enforcement action by authorities.
The incident has sparked anger among residents, who alleged that overloaded trucks transporting illegally extracted laterite stones regularly use the route, posing a serious threat to commuters and schoolchildren in the area.
Residents pointed out that a nearby secondary and higher secondary school witnesses the movement of nearly 400 to 500 students daily, increasing fears over road safety.
Locals further claimed that although the Mining Department had conducted raids in Malpan in September against alleged illegal quarrying operations, the extraction and transportation of laterite stones have reportedly resumed openly.
Following the accident, residents have demanded strict action against illegal quarry operators, tighter monitoring by authorities, and restrictions on heavy vehicle movement through the populated stretch before a major tragedy occurs.
