New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday called for a constructive and productive Monsoon Session of Parliament, urging lawmakers to engage in meaningful discussions based on facts while highlighting India’s economic progress and the achievements of its young innovators.
In an apparent swipe at Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, the Prime Minister praised the team behind Skyroot Aerospace’s successful Vikram 1 launch, noting that the average age of its members was just 28 years. He remarked that he was “not talking about a 56-year-old youth,” drawing laughter as he underscored the contribution of young Indians to the country’s growing global stature.
Modi described the success of the private space startup as a reflection of India’s limitless potential, saying the achievements of the nation’s youth were earning international recognition and demonstrating that their aspirations were as vast as space itself. He also recalled that an Indian astronaut had recently travelled to the International Space Station, describing it as another milestone in India’s expanding space programme.
Addressing the media before Parliament convened, the Prime Minister expressed hope that the Monsoon Session would provide every Member of Parliament an opportunity to be heard. He stressed the importance of healthy democratic debate and encouraged first time and young MPs to actively participate in discussions.
Highlighting India’s economic performance, Modi said the country had continued to register strong growth despite global uncertainties and ongoing conflicts in West Asia. He noted that India remained the world’s fastest growing major economy with a growth rate of 7.7 per cent and expressed confidence that Parliament could further accelerate the country’s development.
The government is expected to introduce several significant bills during the session, including amendments relating to foreign contributions, higher education reforms, income tax, the strength of Supreme Court judges, micro, small and medium enterprises, the registration of births and deaths, and the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act.
With an extensive legislative agenda and the Opposition preparing to raise several contentious issues, the Monsoon Session is expected to witness intense debates and significant parliamentary business in the weeks ahead.
