PANAJI: Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) along with office bearers met Director of Agriculture, regarding Farmers issue and demanded to give support price immediately to the farmers also to increase the support price of the crop to Rs. 25.
“We would like to bring to your notice that Goa being a agrarian state wherein many people are involved in different Agriculture Activities. Many Goan farmers, specially in South Goa have cultivated paddy fields not for the sole purpose of profit but as a tradition handed over to them from generations to generations, Also, you will be well aware that Paddy Cultivation has no profit because of high costs involved in it,” said Congress leaders
He further said that Government of Goa promotes Agricultural Schemes at every forum especially through Newspapers and Large-Scale Exhibitions. These schemes motivate the farmers to keep the Goan tradition of farming alive and one such scheme is the Support Price subsidy which the farmers heavily rely on it.
“The subsidy of one season Crop is the essential financial support for the next season Crop. However the subsidy of Farmers are long pending due to insufficient funds,” they said
The Congress said that in the previous 5 to 6 years there was no District Agriculture Office in North and South Goa and subsidy were being released by 31 March or maximum by April end which use to help the Farmers for their next Crop.
“Now the farmers have not received the subsidy due to the change in delivery mechanism. Inquires with the concerned Department reveal that the subsidy will be given to the farmer in a different manner that is through the PFMS Portal,” he said
The leader said that previously the subsidy was given through the Accounts Department of Govt. of Goa.
‘The names and the bank details of around 5000 farmers need to be fed in the new system which is not only time consuming but will also delay the entire process of disbursing the subsidy,” he added
