Madrid:
In a significant diplomatic endeavor, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar concluded a two-day visit to Spain, emphasizing the strengthening bonds between India, Spain, and the European Union as a stabilizing force in turbulent global times. The visit, which took place from January 13 to 14, marked Jaishankar’s first official trip to Spain as India’s External Affairs Minister.
During his engagement in Madrid, Jaishankar met with Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares and addressed the 9th Annual Conference of Spanish Ambassadors. This invitation was a testament to India’s growing global influence, as it was the first time a foreign minister was asked to speak at this prestigious event.
Jaishankar highlighted India’s unique position in global diplomacy, noting its ability to engage with diverse nations. “India is one of the few countries that can maintain dialogue with Russia and Ukraine, Israel and Iran, and is a member of both the Quad and BRICS,” he said. This multifaceted approach is guided by the principle of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas,” which has garnered international appreciation.
The minister also underscored India’s role in global crises, such as the Covid-19 pandemic, where India’s vaccine distribution reached over 100 countries. He recalled Spanish President Pedro Sanchez’s request to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for Hydroxychloroquine supplies, illustrating India’s willingness to assist in difficult times.
Jaishankar emphasized the strong economic ties between India and Spain, with bilateral trade valued at 10 billion euros annually. He anticipated further growth in areas such as railways, automobiles, clean technologies, and space. “In unstable global times, countries that strengthen their relationships and supply chains will forge closer ties,” he noted.
The visit resulted in the signing of two significant agreements – one in the field of sports and the other in sustainable urban development. Jaishankar expressed gratitude to the Indian community in Spain for their role in reinforcing India’s global standing and announced the upcoming establishment of a Spanish consulate in Bengaluru, which he termed a “good sign” for deepening business and cultural connections.
Looking ahead, Jaishankar revealed that 2026 will be celebrated as the Year of Culture, Tourism, and Artificial Intelligence between India and Spain. This initiative aims to enhance people-to-people ties and create new momentum for cooperation between the two nations.
