New Delhi: India’s drive towards defence self-reliance received a significant boost with the commissioning of three indigenously built naval platforms, INS Dunagiri, INS Sandhayak and INS Agray, at the Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers facility in Kolkata.
Designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and built domestically, the three vessels showcase the country’s growing capability to develop advanced military platforms without relying heavily on foreign suppliers. More than 75 per cent of the equipment and systems integrated into the ships are indigenous, reflecting the rapid growth of India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem.
Among the three, INS Dunagiri stands out as one of the Navy’s most advanced warships. The Project 17A stealth frigate is equipped with modern combat systems, advanced sensors and sophisticated weaponry, including the BrahMos missile system and medium-range surface-to-air missiles. Its stealth features are designed to reduce radar detection and enhance survivability during complex maritime operations.
The commissioning of INS Sandhayak further strengthens India’s maritime survey capabilities. Built as part of the Navy’s Large Survey Vessel programme, the ship is tasked with conducting hydrographic and oceanographic surveys in both coastal and deep-sea environments. Equipped with Autonomous Underwater Vehicles and Remotely Operated Vehicles, it will support navigation mapping, scientific research and maritime development projects.
Meanwhile, INS Agray has been designed to tackle submarine threats in shallow and coastal waters. Fitted with advanced sonar systems and anti-submarine weaponry, the vessel enhances the Navy’s ability to detect, track and neutralise underwater threats in strategically important maritime zones.
More than 200 micro, small and medium enterprises from across the country contributed to the construction of the three platforms, underlining the expanding role of Indian industry in defence production.
The induction of the three ships comes at a time when maritime security challenges in the Indian Ocean Region continue to evolve. Their addition is expected to strengthen India’s operational capabilities across surface warfare, hydrographic surveys and anti-submarine missions while reinforcing the country’s commitment to the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat in defence manufacturing.
