New Delhi: India and the Port of Rotterdam are working towards digitalising port processes to speed up cargo evacuation, reduce ship turnaround times and improve logistics efficiency, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said.
Goyal made the announcement during his visit to the Port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands, where he met Port of Rotterdam Chief Executive Officer Boudewijn Siemons to discuss cooperation in modernising India’s port infrastructure and cargo handling systems.
The initiative aims to introduce modern digital standards and improve coordination between Indian customs authorities and Rotterdam port officials. Faster cargo clearance and reduced waiting times for ships are expected to strengthen India’s logistics network and support growing international trade.
Goyal highlighted the need to expand India’s port infrastructure despite significant progress over the past decade. India has doubled its port capacity during this period, but further expansion will be necessary to meet rising trade volumes and economic growth.
By 2047, the country’s port capacity is expected to double twice over the following two decades, requiring sustained investment in infrastructure, technology and operational efficiency.
The minister also highlighted the potential of the India European Union Free Trade Agreement to create new business opportunities for both sides. Rotterdam, Europe’s largest port, serves as a major gateway for Indian goods entering European markets and plays a significant role in international trade and global supply chains.
Improved port connectivity and logistics cooperation between India and the Netherlands could help Indian exporters access European markets more efficiently as trade opportunities expand under the proposed agreement.
During his visit, Goyal also addressed members of the Indian community in Amsterdam, urging professionals and academicians to collaborate with Indian institutions and mentor startups.
Emphasising the importance of youth development, he called for greater responsibility, constructive engagement and stronger connections between young people and the communities in which they live and work.
He also stressed the importance of loyalty towards the country that provides employment and supports families, highlighting the role of responsible citizenship in addressing social challenges.
The discussions in Rotterdam and Amsterdam underline India’s efforts to strengthen international trade partnerships while improving domestic logistics infrastructure and encouraging cooperation between Indian and European businesses.
