New Delhi: India has received the fourth squadron of the Russian-made S-400 Triumf air defence missile system, significantly enhancing the country’s ability to detect and neutralise aerial threats across vast distances. The newly delivered unit is expected to be deployed in an operational sector in the coming weeks.
The arrival marks an important milestone in the 2018 agreement between India and Russia for the purchase of five S-400 squadrons. Three squadrons are already operational, while the latest delivery leaves only one remaining unit to be supplied under the original contract.
Each S-400 squadron is a sophisticated air defence package comprising 16 vehicles, including advanced radar systems, command and control units, and missile launchers. A squadron consists of two batteries equipped with six launchers each and can deploy a total of 128 missiles. Under the deal, India procured 60 launchers and around 6,000 missiles capable of engaging targets at ranges between 120 km and 380 km.
Widely regarded as one of the most advanced air defence systems in service, the S-400 can simultaneously track and engage multiple aerial threats, including fighter aircraft, airborne surveillance platforms, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles. Its induction has become a key component of India’s multi-layered air defence architecture.
Deliveries of the final two squadrons had been delayed due to disruptions caused by the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Despite these challenges, the fourth unit has now reached India, bringing the project closer to completion.
India is also looking beyond the current contract to further strengthen its air defence network. The Defence Acquisition Council has already approved the acquisition of five additional S-400 squadrons, signalling continued investment in long-range air defence capabilities.
At the same time, the country is advancing indigenous programmes such as Project Kusha, which aims to develop a homegrown long-range air defence system with capabilities comparable to the S-400. The project is expected to play a crucial role in boosting self-reliance in advanced defence technology while complementing existing missile defence assets.
