PANAJI: The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) successfully evacuated two critically injured seafarers from a merchant vessel off the Goa coast in a swift medical evacuation operation.
The injured crew members were identified as 37-year-old Georgian national Jismsher Davitaze and 34-year-old Indian national Arun Babu Varukattu. Both were serving aboard the Panama-flagged merchant vessel MT Hawks Liberty, which was on passage from Malé.
According to official sources, both seafarers were in a critical and immovable condition, requiring immediate shore-based medical care. On receiving the distress call, the Coast Guard District Headquarters (Goa) coordinated with relevant agencies to carry out the evacuation.
The offshore patrol vessel ICGS Akshay was deployed for the operation. Coast Guard personnel successfully transferred the injured mariners from the merchant vessel and brought them safely ashore.
The two seafarers were subsequently shifted to Manipal Hospital for advanced medical treatment.
The Indian Coast Guard said the timely operation underscores its commitment to ensuring maritime safety and providing humanitarian assistance to those in distress at sea.
