New Delhi: India’s first hydrogen fuel cell powered passenger train has completed nearly 900 kilometres within the first five days of commercial operations, marking a significant achievement in the country’s transition towards cleaner and more sustainable rail transport.
The train, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 17, is operating on the Jind to Sonipat route in Haryana and represents a major milestone in India’s green mobility programme. With its successful launch, India joins a select group of countries that have introduced hydrogen powered passenger trains into commercial service.
Powered by two 1,200 kilowatt hydrogen electric propulsion systems, the train replaces conventional diesel engines with advanced fuel cell technology. Electricity is generated onboard through the reaction of hydrogen with oxygen, producing only water vapour and heat as by products, making the service a zero direct emission mode of transport.
The project is expected to reduce dependence on diesel and conventional electricity while contributing to India’s environmental goals under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. Officials believe the initiative will play an important role in promoting cleaner energy solutions across the country’s railway network.
Despite the introduction of cutting edge technology, ticket prices have been kept affordable. Passenger fares continue to remain the same as regular Diesel Multiple Unit services, ranging from Rs 10 to Rs 25, ensuring commuters benefit from sustainable transport without any additional financial burden.
The 10 coach train is supported by an indigenously developed hydrogen storage and refuelling facility at Jind, providing the infrastructure required for long term operations. The project is also expected to strengthen India’s self reliance in clean transport technology by encouraging domestic development of hydrogen based railway infrastructure.
The successful performance of the hydrogen train demonstrates the practical viability of zero emission rail transport in India. It is expected to serve as a model for future hydrogen powered railway projects, supporting the country’s long term vision of expanding environmentally friendly, energy efficient and sustainable public transportation.
