New Delhi: As the Islamic calendar gears up for another momentous Haj pilgrimage, India’s Haj quota for 2025 has reached an impressive milestone of 175,025, marking the highest allocation in over a decade. This significant increase from the 136,020 quota in 2014 underscores the Government of India’s persistent efforts to enhance the pilgrimage experience for Indian Muslims. Moreover, all preparatory measures, including flights, transportation, Mina camps, and accommodations, have been meticulously finalized according to Saudi guidelines, reflecting a high level of readiness.
The Haj quota for 2025 stands at 175,025, a notable rise from 2014. The Ministry of Minority Affairs, through the Haj Committee of India, is managing arrangements for 122,518 pilgrims under the main quota. The remaining quota has been allocated to 26 Combined Haj Group Operators (CHGOs), marking a significant consolidation of over 800 private tour operators due to updated Saudi regulations.
However, these CHGOs faced challenges in meeting crucial Saudi deadlines for securing contracts related to Mina camps, accommodations, and transportation. Despite repeated reminders, they were unable to finalize these essential arrangements, complicating the situation for thousands of pilgrims. The Indian government stepped in, engaging with Saudi authorities at multiple levels to address pressing concerns about pilgrims’ safety and accommodation in Mina.
In a welcome development, the Saudi Haj Ministry has agreed to reopen the Haj portal for an additional 10,000 pilgrims. This move, prompted by the Indian government’s diplomatic intervention, offers a lifeline to those whose pilgrimage plans were hanging in the balance. The Haj pilgrimage is anticipated to occur between June 4 and June 9, 2025, provided the customary lunar sighting criteria are met.
