QUEPEM: The Intruz (carnival) was celebrated traditionally in the Ambaualim village of Quepem.
The locals say that they have kept this tradition and culture alive for the last several years and will continue to try to keep our tradition and culture alive.
Juava Fernandes, a native of Ambaualim who took the initiative to perform in Carnival this year, said that the tradition and culture of Intruz (Carnival) in Ambavali village was started by his ancestors.
“We have traditional and cultural arts like Kasali, Dhol, Tasha, Ghumat, Madale, traditional songs, music and traditional instruments, but this traditional way of performing Inturz was tried to stop a few years back,” said Fernandes.
At the time, while introducing (Carnival), some elements had accused our people of drinking and undisciplined behaviour, and because of this, this traditional way of Carnival was stopped for a few years.
But from 2008 to 2022, this tradition was revived once again, which shows enthusiasm among the youth and women in the village. Now we are performing it in every house, village, vaddo and at a place called Maana.
Fernandes said that young people are attracted to keep this tradition alive and well, and those who ignore it should also take part in it.
Carnival is an attempt to preserve the traditions and culture of the ancestors.
