MAPUSA: Just Fitness defeated St Alex 3-0 to emerge, winners of the 1st All Goa Agnel (Sulcar) Memorial Cup (Veterans Football Tournament organised by Calangute Veterans held at port ground Calangute.
In a keenly contested match, both the teams had an equal number of scoring opportunities in the first half, and the Just Fitness Veterans tried hard to score, but some resilient defending by the St Alex defenders blocked their attempts on goal, and they could not find any destination, and both the teams were goalless till half time
In the second half, the strikers found some great form, and the just-fitness strikers took advantage of some bad defending by the St Alex defenders. Their poor defending proved costly as they allowed the Just Ftness stickers to penetrate their defence and eventually score. Shyam gave Just Fitness the lead again.
As the second half progressed, the Just fitness midfielders managed to keep possession with some crisp passing and controlled the entire game in midfield, allowing their strikers to advance and break into the defence of St Alex.
This style of play gave them another goal to go ahead and score the second goal through their star striker Sandesh who scored from close range.
Again some defensive blunders by St Alex defenders proved them costly, and Just fitness strikers managed to take advantage of it. One of their strikers was dropped into the penalty box, and the referee pointed to the penalty box, giving just fitness a penalty; a neatly taken penalty kick showed just fitness the third goal and eventually gave them the match-winner. Chief guest and ex-Dempo coach Anthony D’Souza awarded Rosario D’Souza from St Alex as the man of the match.
