New Delhi: Kolkata Knight Riders have dramatically revived their hopes of reaching the Indian Premier League 2026 playoffs after registering a commanding eight wicket victory over Delhi Capitals on Friday.
The victory marked KKR’s fourth consecutive win and has significantly improved their chances of securing a place in the top four after a difficult start to the season. A brilliant bowling effort combined with a stunning century from Finn Allen helped Kolkata comfortably chase down the target and gain valuable momentum at a crucial stage of the tournament.
Currently placed seventh on the points table, KKR still have four league matches remaining and remain firmly in contention for a playoff berth. The side led by Ajinkya Rahane now appears to have regained rhythm just as the competition enters its decisive phase.
KKR’s path to qualification is relatively straightforward if they continue their winning streak. In the ten team IPL format, 16 points is generally considered enough to qualify for the playoffs. However, due to an earlier washout against Punjab Kings, Kolkata already have an additional point, meaning they can potentially finish with 17 points if they win all four remaining matches.
Reaching 17 points would almost certainly guarantee qualification without depending heavily on net run rate calculations. However, the road ahead remains challenging as KKR are scheduled to face strong opponents including Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Gujarat Titans, Mumbai Indians, and Delhi Capitals once again.
If KKR lose even one of these matches, their maximum possible tally would drop to 15 points, which could result in a tight race involving multiple teams. In that scenario, net run rate could become crucial. Although Kolkata’s net run rate has been a concern throughout the season, the massive victory over Delhi, achieved by chasing 143 in just 14.2 overs, has helped improve it to minus 0.169.
KKR may also require favourable results in matches involving Bengaluru, Gujarat, and Sunrisers Hyderabad if the qualification battle becomes dependent on points calculations.
