New Delhi:
In a move that underscores India’s long-standing tradition of hospitality, the Indian government has extended the stay of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, despite persistent calls from Dhaka for her extradition. This decision comes as Hasina, 77, has been residing in India since August 5, 2024, following her ouster from power in Bangladesh due to massive student-led protests.
Hasina’s extended stay in India is seen as a special arrangement, reflecting the country’s motto of “Atithi Devo Bhava” or “the guest is God.” This is not her first time in exile in India; she previously stayed here after her father’s assassination in 1975. The current extension of her visa is part of a “long-term arrangement,” according to officials familiar with the matter.
The Bangladesh interim government has been pushing for Hasina’s extradition, citing her alleged involvement in serious crimes, including enforced disappearances and the killings during the July protests that led to her downfall. Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has issued arrest warrants for Hasina and several of her former associates, accusing them of “crimes against humanity and genocide.” The ICT has set a deadline of February 12 for her to appear before the court.
The Bangladesh government recently revoked the passports of 97 individuals, including Hasina, due to their alleged roles in the July killings and enforced disappearances. Abul Kalam Azad Majumder, Deputy Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, confirmed that the passports were cancelled to prevent these individuals from fleeing the country.
India’s decision to extend Hasina’s stay is also influenced by the India-Bangladesh extradition treaty, which does not allow for the extradition of individuals in cases that are deemed political in nature. Indian officials have emphasized that this extension should not be interpreted as granting her asylum but rather as a temporary measure to ensure her safety.
