PANAJI: Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao has written to Goa Governor P.S. Sreedharan Pillai, urging that the forthcoming Monsoon Session of the Goa Legislative Assembly be convened for at least 15 days to enable discussion on pressing issues affecting the state.
In his letter, Alemao said several important matters, including the Sarvan-Karapur issue, the impact of Section 39-A of the Town and Country Planning (TCP) Act, unemployment, deteriorating law and order, rising inflation and student-related concerns, require detailed deliberation in the Assembly.
Alemao expressed concern over what he termed the government’s failure to reconvene the Assembly despite the Governor’s earlier direction to take necessary action on his letter dated April 9, 2026, seeking the immediate resummoning of the House.
He pointed out that the Thirteenth Session of the Eighth Legislative Assembly, originally scheduled from March 6 to March 27, 2026, was curtailed after only seven sittings due to the Ponda by-election and the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct.
According to Alemao, the justification for cutting short the session was unacceptable, as legislative business continued in other states despite similar electoral circumstances.
He said the premature suspension of the Assembly denied the Opposition an opportunity to raise critical public issues and delayed discussions on important legislation concerning Goa’s land resources, environment, demography and identity.
Alemao expressed hope that the Governor would treat the matter with urgency and ensure that the upcoming Monsoon Session is held for no fewer than 15 sittings, allowing sufficient time for meaningful debate on issues of public importance.
