PANAJI: Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao launched a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the ‘Samvidhan Bachao Abhiyan’ rally held at Azad Maidan in Panaji, accusing the ruling party of dividing the people along religious lines and failing on multiple governance fronts.
Addressing the gathering, Alemao emphasized the need to protect the Constitution and uphold the unity envisioned by Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. “The vigilant people of Goa must unite to defeat the BJP’s conspiracy to divide us by religion. The Constitution has given us rights, and it’s our duty to defend them,” he said.
Alemao accused the BJP of targeting minorities and promoting a divisive agenda. “This government thrives on commissions and vendetta, not governance. It has failed to uphold law and order, protect the environment, and provide employment or central government jobs,” he added.
Referring to recent national security concerns, Alemao said the BJP must be held accountable for the failure in preventing the Pahalgam attack. He also criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not visiting Manipur during the violence and blamed the government for the deteriorating situation in Kashmir.
Taking a swipe at the state leadership, Alemao alleged that the BJP has put Goa on “fast track sale,” citing rampant land conversions and property acquisitions by outsiders. “Land scams are flourishing under this regime. Our land is being sold off to Sharma and Verma, while the government looks the other way,” he said.
On the Mhadei issue, he accused the BJP of betraying Goa and failing to safeguard the river, a critical lifeline for the state.
Highlighting the Congress party’s contrast, Alemao said, “We never imposed unwanted projects or engaged in vindictive politics. We scrapped SEZs when the people opposed them. We believe in inclusive development, not in serving crony capitalists.”
The rally was part of a broader campaign to mobilize public support for protecting democratic values and constitutional rights ahead of the upcoming elections.
