Chandigarh: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) suffered a major political setback in Punjab on Monday after three of its MLAs joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) following their resignations from the party and legislative Assembly.
Suspended AAP MLA and former IPS officer Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh resigned as a legislator on Monday morning and joined the BJP a few hours later. Two other legislators who had quit AAP on Sunday also joined the saffron party, bringing the three leaders together under the BJP banner.
The legislators are Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, who represents Amritsar North, Chetan Singh Jouramajra from Samana and Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra from Sanour in Patiala district.
Their decision to switch parties comes at a crucial time for AAP as it prepares for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. The departures add to the political challenges facing the ruling party as opposition parties seek to strengthen their position in the state.
The entry of the three former AAP legislators is expected to give the BJP an opportunity to expand its political presence in Punjab ahead of the upcoming electoral contest.
