PANAJI: Acting on a suo moto Public Interest Litigation over the alarming sight of dead fish floating in Mala Lake, the High Court has directed the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) and the Directorate of Health (DoH) to submit detailed status reports.
During the hearing, the court made it clear that the matter is not confined to a one-off incident at Mala Lake, but reflects a deeper and more systemic problem impacting water bodies located along the outskirts of urban centres.
The bench observed that such recurring incidents point towards possible lapses in monitoring, pollution control, and public health safeguards.
It stressed the need for coordinated action by authorities to assess the extent of contamination and prevent further ecological damage.
The case has been adjourned to Tuesday, by which time both departments have been asked to place their findings on record.
