MARGAO: A Fatorda resident lost ₹3.25 lakh in an alleged cyber fraud after being tricked into installing a malicious mobile application under the pretext of updating his gas bill.
According to a complaint lodged by Ashraf Kadir Naik, a resident of Chandrawado, Fatorda, currently residing at Vikhroli West in Mumbai, an unknown person contacted him on his mobile phone between May 29 and June 5, 2026, claiming that his gas bill needed to be updated.
The accused allegedly persuaded Naik to download and install a file named “Mahanagar Gas Bill Update APK.” After the application was installed, the fraudster reportedly gained unauthorized access to the complainant’s mobile phone.
Police said the accused subsequently carried out four unauthorized UPI transactions from Naik’s Canara Bank account, resulting in a financial loss of ₹3,25,490.
A case has been registered at Fatorda Police Station, and further investigation is being conducted by PSI Ramrai Naik.
Police have once again urged citizens to avoid downloading APK files received through calls, messages, or unknown sources and to verify any such requests directly with the concerned service provider.
