CANSAULEM: A 56-year-old man who was found unresponsive near Birla Cross in Cansaulim was declared dead after being brought to the Primary Health Centre (PHC), Cansaulim, on Tuesday.
According to police, information was received from PHC Cansaulim at around 12:51 pm on June 23 that an unknown person had been brought dead by a 108 ambulance after being found lying near Birla Cross.
During the inquiry, police identified the deceased as Ulhas Katekar, a resident of Hoshangabad’s Mehragaon area in Madhya Pradesh. He was reportedly unemployed and had been living around the Birla Cross area, often sleeping at different locations.
Police said that a local resident, Pranay Kumar Nayak, informed them that at around 10:30 am he noticed Katekar lying in a roadside shelter, covered with a bedsheet and unresponsive. He was subsequently shifted to PHC Cansaulim, where the attending doctor declared him dead.
Further inquiries with the deceased’s family members reportedly revealed that he was a chronic alcoholic and had been disowned by his relatives.
An inquest panchanama was conducted, and the body has been preserved at South Goa District Hospital (SGDH), Margao, for medico-legal formalities.
Further investigation is being carried out by PSI Mahesh Bhomkar of Verna Police Station.
