New Delhi: The Manipur Police has issued a strong warning against the spread of misinformation on social media, describing recent allegations targeting security forces and police personnel as “baseless” and “grossly false.” Authorities have also announced legal action against individuals found responsible for circulating misleading content.
The warning comes amid ongoing efforts to restore peace and normalcy in Manipur, where communities affected by years of ethnic tensions have been attempting to rebuild trust and return to daily life.
The controversy followed an incident on May 30, 2026, when unidentified armed miscreants allegedly opened fire near Kharam Vaiphei village in Kangpokpi district, around 45 kilometres from Imphal. According to police, the firing occurred at approximately 1:45 pm and resulted in five kutcha houses being set ablaze. No injuries were reported.
Police and security personnel stationed near the village responded quickly, bringing the situation under control and preventing further escalation. However, soon after the incident, several social media posts emerged linking the attack to the district’s Superintendent of Police and security forces.
In response, the Manipur Police publicly refuted the allegations and shared one such post from a social media account identified as “DynastyDoungel.” The police stated that claims suggesting involvement or support by the district police chief were entirely unfounded and did not reflect the facts of the case.
“Posts or statements circulated on social media by any media or fake outlet associated with militant groups praising the District SP are baseless and do not arise from the facts of the incident,” the police said in an official statement.
Authorities warned that legal proceedings would be initiated against those spreading disinformation during what they described as a sensitive period for the state.
The police also noted that several incidents of violence in Manipur over the past three years have been fuelled by false information circulating online. The warning comes shortly after IPS officer Mukesh Singh assumed charge of the state police force, bringing extensive experience in counter-insurgency and anti-terror operations.
