SANCOALE: Former Cortalim Zilla Panchayat member and former Trinamool Congress (TMC) Goa State convenor Mariano Rodrigues formally rejoined the Congress party on Tuesday evening at a well-attended induction programme in Sancoale.
The event, held at Tome Carvalho Hall, witnessed the participation of nearly 1,500 supporters, including youth, women and local residents from Sancoale and neighbouring areas. The gathering was marked by loud cheers and slogans as Rodrigues returned to the party.
Rodrigues was inducted into the Congress in the presence of AICC Goa in-charge Manikrao Thakre, AICC Secretary Dr. Anjali Nimbalkar, Leader of the Opposition Yuri Alemao, GPCC President Girish Chodankar and other senior Congress leaders.
Speaking at the programme, Congress leaders welcomed Rodrigues back into the party and expressed confidence that his return would strengthen the organisation in South Goa ahead of future elections.
Rodrigues, a prominent political figure in Sancoale, is regarded as having a strong grassroots network in the region. His recent performance in the Zilla Panchayat elections, where he contested as an Independent and finished runner-up after a closely fought contest, is seen by political observers as a key factor behind his return to the Congress.
Party leaders believe his induction will help reinforce the Congress’ presence in the Cortalim Assembly constituency, particularly in Sancoale, where he continues to enjoy significant local support.
With the Assembly elections approaching, Rodrigues’ return is expected to add a new dimension to the political contest in Cortalim, with the large turnout at the induction programme being viewed as a strong show of support for the veteran leader.
