CALANGUTE: Calangute MLA Michael Lobo has strongly opposed the entry of outside taxi aggregators into Goa, emphasizing the need for a transparent and modernized taxi business within the state.
Speaking to reporters, Lobo said the local taxi industry must be regulated with clear policies, and all services should be digitized — including fare structures.
“I am totally against bringing outside taxi aggregators into Goa. There should be transparency in the taxi business in Goa. Some things should be put in place. Everything should be online, including the market rate for taxis,” Lobo stated.
The MLA called on the state government to support local taxi operators by establishing a Goa-based digital platform that can compete with national players, while ensuring accountability and fare uniformity.
He stressed that transparency would help both tourists and locals, curbing arbitrary pricing and building trust in local services.
Lobo’s remarks come amid ongoing debates around the presence of major taxi app companies in the state, with some arguing their inclusion could lower prices and improve service, while others fear it could hurt the livelihoods of local drivers.
While acknowledging the need for adaptation to new business models, he cautioned that changes should not undermine local operators.
“The challenge is to manage these changes without causing harm. Our businesses must remain in local hands, not taken over by outsiders,” he added.
Lobo also addressed the issue of rent-a-vehicle services, noting the government has ceased issuing new rent-a-bike licenses and limited rent-a-car permits.
He expressed concern over a rise in accidents linked to drunk driving, calling for government intervention to regulate the sector.
